The Supreme Court has today pronounced its judgment in the defamation case filed against Congress MP Rahul Gandhi.  The court has rejected permission to run contempt case against Rahul Gandhi.  The Supreme Court has approved Rahul Gandhi's apology.  Closing the case, the Supreme Court warned Rahul Gandhi not to interrupt the court in his political rivalry.

 BJP's Meenakshi Lekhi filed a petition in the Supreme Court against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.  In this petition, quoting the Supreme Court, a demand for criminal contempt was initiated against Rahul for making a statement 'chowkidar chor hai' against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

On May 10, the Supreme Court reserved the decision on the application for defamation filed in this case.  The case was being heard by a bench headed by CJI Ranjan Gogoi.

 What is the whole matter?

 During the campaign for the 2019 Soksabha election, the then Congress President Rahul Gandhi had said that 'Chowkidar Chor Hai', connecting Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the alleged mess in the Rafale deal.  After which BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi filed a contempt petition against Rahul Gandhi in the Supreme Court.  This petition demanded criminal prosecution against Rahul Gandhi.  Also, it was said in the petition that Rahul Gandhi had made false allegations against the Prime Minister by taking the name of the Supreme Court.

 In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP had raised a lot of Rahul Gandhi's statement that the watchman is a thief.  All ministers and leaders from Prime Minister Modi to BJP had written 'Chowkidar' in front of their names on social media.
