Five non-local labourers were shot dead by terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir's Kulgam on Tuesday evening. One person has been critically injured in the attack and has been rushed to the hospital.
The labourers hailed from Murshidabad in West Bengal.
Identified as Kamaluddin, Mursalim, Rofik, Noimuddin and Rofikul, the five labourers were inhabitants of Bokhara in Bahal Nagar under Sagardighi police station in West Bengal and had come to Kashmir about one month ago. The injured person is identified as Johiruddin.
The mother of one the deceased said that her son did not want to go to Kashmir this time. However, he later decided to go there with others. He assured that he would come back home after one month and then cut paddy, the mother said.
A massive search operation is going on at the moment. Additional security forces have been called in.
Jammu and Kashmir DGP Dilbagh Singh told India Today TV that Pakistan is behind the attack.
All the labourers worked as masons and were constructing a house when the attack took place in Kulgam's Katarsu, which is known to be dominated by Hizbul operatives.
Jammu and Kashmir Police sources told ANI, "Security forces have cordoned the area and a massive search operation is going on there. Additional security forces have been called in. Labourers killed by terrorists were believed to be from West Bengal and were working as daily wagers."
Deputy Commissioner Shahid Chaudhary condemned the attack. He tweeted, "The news from south of the Valley is utterly shocking, condemnable. These five men were in construction sector. Attacks in earlier weeks have been on people connected with fruit trade. Need no further guesses."
Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took to Twitter to extend help to the families. "We are shocked and deeply saddened at the brutal killings in Kashmir. Five workers from Murshidabad lost their lives. Words will not take away the grief of the families of the deceased. All help will be extended to the families in this tragic situation," Mamata Banerjee wrote on Twitter.

The attack happened on a day a delegation of parliamentarians from the European Union is visiting Kashmir to talk to locals and ask them about their experience after the abrogation of Jammu and Kashmir's special status under Article 370 of the Constitution in August.
Since the Centre's decision on Article 370, terrorists have been targeting truckers and labourers, mainly who have come to the Valley from outside Kashmir.
On Monday, a trucker from Udhampur district was killed by militants in Anantnag, police said. This was the fourth truck driver to be killed by militants since August 5.
On October 24, terrorists killed two non-Kashmiri truck drivers in Shopian district.
On October 14, two terrorists, including a suspected Pakistani national, shot dead the driver of a truck having Rajasthan registration number and assaulted an orchard owner in Shopian district. The driver was identified as Sharief Khan.
Two days later, Punjab-based apple trader Charanjeet Singh was killed and Sanjeev injured when terrorists attacked them in Shopian district.
The same day, a brick kiln worker from Chhattisgarh was shot dead by militants in Pulwama district.
